High School Physical Education

Physical education should always be prioritized with fun first. As mentioned in one of my earlier blogs, our goal as physical educators is to develop a lifelong love for physical activity or a physically active lifestyle. It makes sense with elementary and even middle school aged students. It should also be the focus with high school. No matter what age group the class is, enjoying physical activity should always be first priority.
In order for students to truly enjoy a quality physical education class, there must be structure and a plan. The reason this is so important is due to most high school physical education classes being a waste of time. Most students I specifically talk to state that their P.E. class is either just running/walking laps or the teacher rolls out the balls and allows free play. The way most high schools are run, athletes go to athletics and the non athletes go to P.E. The non athletes are the ones who need something more than just rolling out the ball because sports may not be their first choice of fun. As mentioned in one of my previous blogs, there are numerous websites that offer free lesson plans to look at and use in all grades.
Since students in high school will soon be on their own and responsible for their personal health and physical activity, enjoyment should be key. “High School physical education is a critical time for transitioning students from skill-based instruction and activity exploration, to self-directed activity and fitness management3.” In other words, as physical educators, we are teaching our students how to stay successful in health and fitness. Fun is where it should begin and where it should end.
