Dancers, professional or amature, are required to perform intense control, strength, and flexibility, most of the time, all at the same time2. Core strength plays a key role in the ability of a dancer to dance to their fullest potential, improve body placement, and reduce risk of injury1. Taking the dance styles we have already discussed, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and ballet, into consideration, we will discuss how core strength is needed. But first, what is core strength?
Core strength comes from the muscles in your core. Your core is made up of your abdominal muscles, which is commonly referred to as your abs. These muscles are more specifically your rectus abdominis, transverse abdominis and internal and external obliques. Along with your abdominal muscles your core is also your gluteus, pelvic floor and scapular muscles. Your core acts as a stabilizer to allow another part of your body to generate power2.
For any type of dance, balance, speed, flexibility, and strength are required. “A strong core ensures that the dance movements are well coordinated, and good balance, and flexibility are maintained at the same time2.”
Jazz, contemporary and hip hop dance all require quick challenging movements, where jumps and turns are incorporated. Without the core strength to compact the core against the spine, the movement will look sloppy and weak and if you land from the jumps without your core tight, it can lead to injury1.
Ballet is a style that gives the illusion of a “lifted, light and airy quality.1” Ballet is performed in six positions, five of which are turned out from the hip and requires center and core control. For dancers of all ages and skills, who perform ballet, a strong core is extremely important for placement, turns, jumps and landing from jumps1.
Without core strength, dance would look sloppy and weak and lead to injury. Dancers rely on their core to improve their grace and quick opposition movements that lead to a great performer.

I love this blog post! Core strength is super important for a dancer. As a fellow dancer, I wouldn't have been able to do any style of dance without a strong core.
