It’s Good! A Kicker’s Guide to Success on the Gridiron

Coaches are an integral part of the sporting industry.  Every sport has to have a coach with experience in order to develop quality players.  A coach who has never played the game may not be as beneficial as compared to a coach who has spent years on the field as a player.   As a collegiate football kicker/punter, my career goal is to become a Kicker/ Punter position coach.  I want to create an opportunity for my players to learn everything there is to know about the art of kicking a football.
I remember when I was a high school athlete; I had a burning desire to play football at the college level.  Now that I have accomplished that goal, I want to mentor young players who have a raw talent for the kicking game.  I want to develop my own business which will serve as a training camp for Kickers and Punters; the name of my business will be: ‘It’s Good!’ - Coach A’s Kicking.  The phrase “It’s Good” is music to a kicker’s ear after a field goal or extra point is kicked.  On a different note, not everything in life will be perfect, not everything will be “good”.  Adversity will strike and it’s how you handle being down that will determine your accomplishments.  Hard work and dedication will bring forth a positive outlook in the lives of those who chose to keep going even when hard times come.  I want my students to remember that even if a kick doesn’t go as it should have- “It’s all good”.  Erase it and move on to the next.  Kicking is a mental game more than it is ability.  They must have a strong mind and a short term memory in order to become great kickers and punters.  You can have the best ability in the world but if you allow a bad kick or the noises of the outside get in your head, you will never be successful at the position.  The goal of ‘It’s Good’ will be to capture the attention of those kickers/ punters and show them how to succeed.
One-on-one sessions will include drills, charting and filming kicks, studying film and coaching them on and off the field.  At the end of each film session, I will take the athlete back out to the field to practice the new techniques and help them realize that they are getting better after each practice session.  One unique aspect of my business will be a weight lifting program designed just for kickers/ punters.  Being able to kick the ball is more difficult than people think- it requires accuracy, power, height, distance, hang time, placement, and balance.  Weight training with specific workout for kicker and punters will set ‘It’s Good!’ apart from other Sport Specialty, clinic, or camps.  As a player, I have attended many clinics and camps and was never given the opportunity to learn about the importance of strength & conditioning.  I have never had a kicking coach/ instructor that have taken the time to develop a weight lifting program for me.  Adding the weight training programs for each athlete will take more time but will also help my name get out more in the aspect of me caring to go the extra mile for each player.  My athletes will set themselves apart as well because of their production on the field.
Athletes interested in a football career as a kicker/ punter can visit the ‘It’s Good’ website to find out equipment (ball, tees), It’s Good apparel, instructional DVDs on drills, nutrition, and weight lifting.   The website will also include a ranking of each athlete to help them obtain a college scholarship.  I will send out links to college coaches around the nation and introduce the kicking talent to them.
Do you think you have the leg to make it as kicker/ punter?  Do you possess the mental toughness to survive as a kicker/ punter?  Let me help you develop an ‘It’s Good’ mentality for success on the gridiron.  ‘It’s Good’ will provide athletes with the best training needed to succeed on the field.  It’s time to tee it up!

  1. Great article, Isaac. Sports themselves are such a great classroom for life, and I love the fact that one of your priorities is to mentor young players, and be a positive influence on their lives.

  2. This was a very interesting article to me. Personally I've never hear of a kicking game so I thought that this idea is pretty neat. I do agree with in order to have successful players you must have a coach that has played that position. In my highschool some of our "coaches" had never even played football.
    Very clever idea.

  3. As a former high school kicker this article has more power than most realize! Kicker are overshadowed and underappreciated, usually taking more scrutiny than any other player on the entire team. Most kickers, including myself are tasked with training on their own due to the lack of availability of coaches and the high prices they charge or an individual session. You're doing a good thing here, the next crop of specialists will benefit from your work tremendously. I am interested in working with you Isaac!
