Conventional Stroke Recovery

There are many methods for stroke rehabilitation and recovery, however, research has shown that some approaches are more beneficial than others. In recent decades science has made enormous strides toward perfecting recovery  but, is still lacking due to the wide array of stroke induced disabilities. “Stroke is related to neural plasticity, involving the development of new neuronal interconnections, acquiring new functions, and compensating for impairment.” 2 According to National Stroke Association “the main goal of rehabilitation should be to enable an individual who has experienced a stroke to reach the highest possible level of independence and be as productive as possible.” 2

Conventional Methods

  • Physical Therapy (PT) “ uses training, exercises, and physical manipulation of the stroke patient's body with the intent of restoring movement, balance, and coordination.” 1
  • Occupational Therapy (OT) “implemented to relearn everyday activities such as eating, drinking and swallowing, dressing, bathing, cooking, reading and writing, and toileting.” 1
  • Speech Therapy “helps to relearn language and speaking skills, or learn other forms of communication.” 1
  • Psychological Therapies “deal with depression, anxiety, frustration, and anger, are common post-stroke disabilities.” 1
Due to the fact that most all cases differ in severity, damage location, and bodily functions affected, recovery programs can use any of these methods or even a combination of multiple methods to achieve motor recovery. Functional recovery can stimulate “neural plasticity that can change central nervous system structure and/or function.” 2 There are newly developed methods of recovery that use similar methodologies however there is still an astronomical amount of research needed to be done on neural plasticity and neurologic recovery from stroke.

  1. It is exciting to see some of the progress that patients make in the wellness lab. What area of stroke rehab interests you the most? One thing that impresses me is seeing how positive and determined people are when they are pushing and working so hard to simply function better on a day to day basis.

  4. Strokes are a very serious thing. I like how the the point of article is to elaborate methods and what the main goal is. The main goal is to help them become independent again and it's sad knowning that it's one of the hardest challenges for people that have experienced a stroke.

  5. I personally have family members that have been through strokes and suffer from lack of movement in some portions of their body. This article explains the ways a patient that has experienced a stroke, works on recovering some of their day-to-day functions that were once second nature to them.

  6. This was a good read as I know a very good friend who had a stroke. Physical therapy is something that should be advertised and recommended more by doctors, coaches and trainers.
