Student Characteristics

In a previous blog, classroom factors such as, the teacher, teaching strategies utilized, and the learning environment were discussed. Student characteristics are also one of the many components that influence the learning outcomes in a physical education class. Student characteristics include willingness to ask questions, respectfulness to others, and eagerness to participate.
Willingness to Ask Questions
A physical educator will never know if students really understand the concepts taught until students actually ask questions for clarity. When a student asks questions it is often beneficial to the class as a whole because chances are if one student has a question, then other students might have that same question.2 However, the need to ask questions can be reduced by supplying thorough directions of the physical activities taught.

Respectfulness of Others
Students should be taught, from the first day of class, to respect others including peers and individuals in charge. Obedience and respect are important values to instill in children from day one, since they will be called to these values on a daily basis in the classroom.1 Students that are respectful indirectly create a safe learning environment for everyone in the gym.
Eagerness to Participate
Children who perform best in school have a natural eagerness to learn new things.1 As a PE teacher, it is imperative that the eagerness of all students to participate in physical activities is unleashed. Maximum participation is a critical component of learning in PE.
Closing
The willingness to ask questions, respectfulness to others, and eagerness to participate are student characteristics that influence the learning environment. Next to be discussed  is the negative health factors associated with childhood obesity and the impact of diet and exercise on childhood obesity.
