Prevention of Health-Related Diseases

In a previous blog, the topic discussed was about student characteristics such as willingness to ask questions, respectfulness to others, and eagerness to participate. These characteristics of students influence the learning environment in a physical education class. They are characteristics that impact the student both inside and outside of a physical education class. Childhood obesity is another factor that can negatively affect a student, however, there are ways to prevent childhood obesity through physical education programs.
Health-Related Diseases
There are many health-related diseases caused by childhood obesity that take a negative toll on students. Obese youth are more likely to have risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol or high blood pressure.1 An obese student with high blood pressure could potentially pass out during physical activity which could be potentially fatal. Because of the high risk that childhood obesity presents, physical educators should work towards prevention methods.
Preventing Childhood Obesity
Healthy lifestyle choices should be taught on the first day of PE class and emphasized throughout the entire school year to prevent childhood obesity. Encourage healthy eating habits.2 PE teachers should teach and practice nutritional eating habits because it is the most important step towards a healthy lifestyle. The second most important step would be exercising. Children and teens should participate in at least 60 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity most days of the week, and every day if possible.2 Physical educators should introduce a variety of physical activities so students will engage in physical activities outside of gym class.

Closing
Childhood obesity is a negative student characteristic that can be prevented through introduction to both healthy eating habits and a variety of physical activities. It would also help if PE teachers remain physically fit in order to resemble the change they want to see in obese students. Next to be discussed is why physical education programs are important.
