Cerebral Palsy (CP): Brain damage in a baby that leads to disability. It occurs 3 out of 1000 live births, often with premature babies. Infection during pregnancy can lead to CP.
Symptoms: Muscle spasms, weakness and abnormal movements. Their actions (movement) can be floppy or stiff. CP is not a chronic disorder but can affect motor function, thought processing, swallowing, and speech. Seizures are common with Cerebral Palsy.
Diagnostic Process: Ultrasound, CT, or MRI can help detect CP.
Rehabilitation: Infants with CP, need help eating, moving and communicating. Medicine can help with spasticity. Spasticity is a feature of altered skeletal muscle performance with a combination of paralysis, increased tendon reflex activity and hypertonia. It is also colloquially referred to as an unusual "tightness", stiffness, or "pull" of muscles. School and social activities are important to the development of a child with CP to improve the quality of a full life.
