Division 1 Playoffs
The past two years in NCAA football have been great due to the new playoff system2. No more of the BCS system where a team’s record was all that mattered on who should play in the national championship game. Teams could schedule weak opponents and run through their conference with ease, setting themselves up for a chance in a major bowl game or national championship. The NCAA finally got everything right by implementing the College Football Playoff but many speculators including myself wonder if four teams are enough? Why can’t the division 1 committees add more teams and more playoff spots? Division 2 and Division One FCS football offers 24 playoff spots with the number one and two teams in the region getting a first round bye1. The best part is that these first place teams in the region get to host their playoff games. Why can’t the NCAA Division 1 teams do the same thing? Could you imagine a playoff game being played at home for the University of Alabama, it would literally become a state holiday or Texas A&M hosting a playoff game inside of Kyle Field, tickets would be sold out in minutes. So why won’t the committees do this? One simple answer can be given and that answer is money! All too many times money becomes the deciding factor of everything in the NCAA. The NCAA gets so much money off of sponsorship's from outside resources that they often become corrupt with that money. For a non-profit organization the NCAA makes a killing off of bowl and playoff football games. I still think that they could make more money if they would allow more college teams in the College Football Playoff. They could also allow games to be played at home for the better seed and I believe you would have more interest in college football than any other sport pro or amateur. The best way to look at this scenario is the NCAA basketball tournament, where literally millions of people fill out a bracket and tune in to watch every game played since the games are ALL televised. Quite honestly this is a simple fix for the NCAA to make to their playoff system better. Just add more teams and more money will come in, let there be home playoff games and more fans will be created. If money is what the NCAA wants, then this is how they can make more!
