The Importance of Fundamental Skills

As an athlete you have probably spent your whole life training to better your skills, to become the best you possibly can at your respective sport. Many athletes are training every day just as hard as you are. When it comes down to it, if you want to be one of the elite athletes you need to return to the fundamentals of your sport and perfect it. “While the fundamentals aren’t always fun, they do make all the difference when it comes to mental toughness and sport success, making it all that more important to get kids to “buy in” to the process.”1.

Take some of the greatest athletes to ever play their own respective sports, like Larry Bird, or Steve Nash. There have been plenty of athletes come into the NBA that are stronger, faster, more talented, and just better overall athletes. But the reason the likes of Bird and Nash can stand out among the others is because they are increasingly more fundamentally sound. Flashy behind the back passes, and acrobatic layups are always a joy to watch, but as an athlete in basketball there will more many more opportunities to make a long bounce pass to a teammate, or to take an open 12 foot jump shot off the dribble. Making the simple plays can make the biggest difference not only on the scoreboard, but for your individual play as well.

As a coach I know that athletes want to move on to more advanced skills, but they first need to be able to grasp the basic building blocks in which the advanced skills are derived from. This first starts with coaches teaching the fundamentals to athletes when they are still young.”For children to have success in sport – either for recreation or competition – it is important they master movement skills before learning sport skills, and fundamental sport skills before specific techniques.”2. Being able to develop how to properly pass a ball, or the proper form in a jump shot while first learning to play the game can develop good habits.

  1. Fundamentals are very essential in becoming an elite athlete. That's why it is important to get kids started in sports early, to develop these fundamental skills sooner in life, so the more advanced movements can be performed later in life with fundamentals all ready developed.
