A personal trainer’s main
responsibilities are to help people get healthy or maintain their healthy
lifestyle. Making someone ‘skinny’ should never be the objective; although,
what people often want is not what
they need. Fad diets have become extremely popular,
particularly with women, but these shortcuts to weight loss and ‘skinny jeans’ are
often unhealthy and detrimental to the body systems.
A fad diet is a weight loss plan, or aid, that
promises dramatic results but do not result in long-term weight loss. Professionals in the health and fitness
industry realize that these diets (fad diets) can actually be dangerous to a
person’s health. Most fad diets are focused on extremely concepts such as high
carbohydrate/low fat, unrealistic portion sizes, liquid diets, or even diet
pills/herbal remedies.
Young adults often turn to fad diets as a
quick fix to solve their weight issues. The ages at which many of these diets
take places are between 18-28 years old. “Despite the warnings from physicians
about short cuts to weight loss, many young adults choose fad diets, because
they want to obtain the glamorized image of thinness and beauty.”(Wax, 2012)
2 Many young people have a warped
self-image and see themselves as overweight - even if they are not - simply
because they don’t ‘fit’ into the paper-thin world of the fashion
industry. Skinny jeans are a prime
example of a fashion trend that causes many young people to embrace fad diets.
Fad diets are one of the most popular
regimens that women use to lose weight. More so than men, some will go from one
fad diet to the next despite the fact that the one before did not work. These
fad diets have cleaver, catchy names that entice and encourage young women, for
example the Skinny
Girl Diet! Yet, regardless of promises and the hype, the fad diet will
always end in heartache and failure.
Personal trainers must be educated in
nutrition education so that they can educate their clients about the dangers of
fad diets. Personal trainers should provide their clients nutritional sound and
safe ways to lose weight. The http://www.foodpyramid.com/mypyramid/ is a reputable site for providing basic
information.
Reminder --- the only safe, long-term
solution to weight loss is EXERCISE & PROPER NUTRITION and any fad diet
that stands alone will turn some into a bag of bones.
I completely agree with this post! I have seen so many of my friends back in highschool diet and live off of salad. I have always tried to eat healthy but I don't trust all of those diets at all. I've seen friends go through eating disorders too when it would have been easier to just go work out. They would have felt more accomplished if they wouldn't have tried to take the easy way out.
ReplyDeletePeople want the easiest way to lose weight therefore they spend money on pill, drinks, or workout equipment to achieve this. However, the only way to lose weight permanently is to eat health food and exercise. Weight loss is not meant to be done overnight.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with this. So many girls out there are so obsessed with their body image that they get caught up in the worst kinds of diets out there. I know girls who have decided to go on the "military diet" where all you eat is a piece of toast for breakfast, a tiny bowl of some kind of broth for lunch and than fruit for dinner and you do this for 3 days and supposedly you're supposed to lose 5 pounds. Afterwards these girls were so exhausted and hungry that they binged the whole day afterwards and just gained those 5 pounds back. Diets like these take a tremendous toll on your body and are not good for you.
ReplyDeleteMany people these days will do whatever they can to lose weight, even if it is unhealthy and even harmful to their bodies. People will try diets, pills, or even accept not eating as a means of losing weight. It is a huge impact on our society and harms too many people every day. Healthy is easy once you get in a routine, but for most, the first step is the hardest: making a change. Society needs to stop calling healthy eating a diet because most people are not dieting, they're just doing whats best for their body and its a lifestyle. Get in the gym, hit the pavement running, and eat right and the results you want will follow
ReplyDeleteReally enjoyed this blog! Not only are people effected by the image of the "perfect" body but some begin the fad diet because of others words. The society does have its toll on the reaction of these people. I agree with what some of these other posts are saying such as that not everyone that is eating healthy are dieting but purely chose to live a healthy style.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this blog . My personal experience with these fad diets are misleading . Women are expected to have these perfect bodies and the advertisement show us "ways" to get them. Especially when the participants of the diets can misuse them.
ReplyDeleteThis blog is a really good one for me to read because I am one of those girls who turns to the fad diets. For example I just started using herbal life and I actually wanted to know what you take on the herbal life diet is. Ive heard a lot of good things about it but it is good for me and will it slow down my metabolism? I really struggle with maintaining and good diet and constantly exercising it would really help if I had a personal trainer to tell me what to eat!
ReplyDeleteI agree with the content of this blog. The most important goal for a person training should be a healthier lifestyle and not just weight loss.people should nottake part in short cuts and fad diets.
ReplyDeleteI agree with this post and can relate in some ways. With all the technology we have today I believe that people expect there to be a quick fix for weight loss. It's also hard sometimes not to get wrapped up in all the advertisements regarding fad diets. For example, TV commercials with before and after pictures can be very convincing to viewers. I agree that the only safe and healthy way to lose weight is exercise and proper nutrition.
ReplyDeleteThanks you very much for sharing these links. Will definitely check this out..
