“The Johnny Football Fall From Grace”

“The Johnny Football Fall From Grace”

If you have not been living under a rock lately you have probably heard the news about Johnny Manziel assaulting his girlfriend in Dallas. With the latest story about Johnny coming out you can not help but wonder where did all this trouble start or come from? I would say that all his problems started with his freshman year of college at the University of Texas A&M.

The First Arrest

The first time Johnny Manziel’s name made the College Station police records was the summer of his Freshman year. Manziel was arrested and jailed early Friday after he was involved in a fight and police said he produced a fake ID. The police report said that Johnny was sticking up for a friend who said a racial slur towards another person which caused the fight.  Upon being arrested Officers found two different sets of fake ids claiming that 19 year old Manziel was 21 years old. Head coach Kevin Sumlin was contacted and made aware of the quarterback’s incident and was quoted as saying, “We are disappointed with his actions and this is out of character for Johnny.”1 Even though all of this happened, Johnny still went on to start at A&M the following season with no punishment from his coaches.
The Latest Arrest

The most recent story of this famous quarterback was that he assaulted his ex -girlfriend in a Dallas hotel. The assault victim, Colleen Crowley, claims that her eardrum was ruptured due to the hit from Johnny Manziel. The police report stated that while Manziel was not drunk but had been drinking that night.2 This all steaming off of a horrible year where Johnny went to rehab for an undisclosed reason while over the summer for the Cleveland Browns. Then more reports came out that Johnny was drunk in practice so the team fake a concussion protocol to protect the young quarterback.

My Personal Opinion

My own personal feelings towards Johnny have two sides. One, he was one of the greatest college quarterbacks to ever put on a uniform. I always chose to watch him play a football game over any other college game that would be on at that time. Second, here is a kid that has never been told no in his life. His family has a long line of oil money which he has claimed his stake on over the years of buying lavish cars and accessories. This attitude of being superior over everyone has not been in check until he got to the NFL. Even now though through all the arrests and multiple accusations Johnny is headed down a very dark path with a limited or no chance of getting back into the NFL. If this kid would have been disciplined in college from the first arrest, I believe this latest incident wouldn’t have happened but for now. He is headed down the path of being the drunk guy at the bar talking about glory days of his youth and what he could of been in the NFL.

  1. do you think Manziel would have turned out different if he had been told no earlier in life and had to face his shortcomings before he got to the NFL?

  2. I think that the lack of "no" in his life had a great effect the guy he is today. It seems like this is becoming more and more prevalent with kids being treated like celebrities at younger and younger ages due to their athletic abilities and they become used to not having the same consequences as everyone else.
