Most everyone knows the basics of basketball from how the game is played to how the game came to existence. Since Dr. James Naismith invented the game in 19811 the rules have change have changed slightly but so has the most important part of the game...the ball.
A soccer ball was used in the very first game played, then in 1894 the Spalding brothers invented the first basketball. It was leather and held together with laces, had a circumference of 32 inches, and weighed just under 20 oz.As the years went by the game progressed and so did the ball. In 1937 Spalding took the laces off the ball and leather became became the official material of the NBA.2 Today the official ball of the NBA is 25 cm in diameter and weighs 22 oz.3
