Facility/Community Health Analysis - Let's Create Improvements

In order to promote healthy living, it is important to first understand the community and facility.  If a community wants to become healthier or a facility wants to make its environment more wholesome for its employers and customers, an analysis of the current situation is necessary.  What is being done now, and does it work?  What are the needs of the community, the customers, the employees?  An analysis must take a step back and look at the whole picture (people, environment, opportunities) surrounding the situation.

Based upon the analyses being completed for the School & Community Health course, please answer the following.  What are you noticing in your community/facility evaluation?  Why should that be a concern for health?

  1. According to the International Journal of Epidemiology, worldwide biomedical and social research has been establishing knowledge on key essentials of health and well-being. In general, this knowledge is inadequately applied in public policies, resulting in avoidable health deficits, waste of human potential and costs to society. It seems that not enough is being done when people know it is needed. The things that are being done for communities are working as well as planned or are not kept up. All communities need healthy initiatives and places to be able to be active and get involved in their community. The things I am noticing in my evaluation is that the facilities available are not adequate enough and are definitely not funded well enough, which seems to be a large problem throughout the country. It is just something that communities think they can get by without having which is just not the case.

  2. According to theThe National Prevention Council 17 heads of departments, agencies, and offices across the Federal government comprise the National Prevention Council and are committed to promoting prevention and wellness. The Council provides the leadership necessary to engage not only the federal government but a diverse array of stakeholders, from state and local policy makers, to business leaders, to individuals, their families and communities, to champion the policies and programs needed to ensure the health of Americans prospers. This council promotes healthy lifestyle choices and changes to individuals such aspartnerships among Federal, state, tribal, local, and territorial governments; business, industry, and other private sector partners; philanthropic organizations; community and faith-based organizations; and everyday Americans. Some of these changes include keeping health care costs down, Poor diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and alcohol misuse which put individuals at risk for disease and even death. The National Prevention Council stops disease before it strikes by promoting health and wellness to all Americans in ways that motivate people to make lifestyle changes that preserve health and longevity through education and direction. Throughout my research cost appears to be the most common and mutual issue among most, leading them to buy cheaper less nutritious food, resist gym memberships, or league sports and even deny health or medical checkups with physicians or clinics. Health is not a worry until it becomes diminished, then individuals wish they had been educated and aware of the health effects of unhealthy habits. Luckily promotions lime theThe National Prevention Strategy by The National Prevention Council can prevent health deficits before they become an issue. Bad habits can be overcome and health can be preserved with some education and direction by the right organization.

  3. Healthy Communities is a movement set to transform the health status of communities across the United States (1). The goal of Healthy communities is to show the community the problems they are facing, and teach the community ways to fix these problems. First and foremost they have to bring the community together and come up with a shared vision for the community. As for my community I believe this is one of the biggest problems they are facing. As a member of the community, I do not feel as though I have any idea if there is a community vision, which is where things would need to start in order to make a change. While there are people in the community who are trying to make a change, they are going to have to get bigger community figures invovled in order to promote a healthy life style. The community does have good parks and recreational resources, but they do need to better publicize these resources and the events that are hosted by them. If the community leaders become more involved and take on a healty community movement, it would help in pulling in more healthy food options, more funding allocated for healthy resources, and bring the community together in one vision focused on bettering the health of the whole community.

  4. Current trends in the field of health promotion emphasize community-based programs employing multiple interventions as the main strategy for achieving population-level change in risk behaviors and health (1). The community I am working with have great parks and recreation, however, they are not used often. This is a community full of fast food, and little other choices. There is no community health program that challenges the behaviors the community partake in everyday. I think a community wide program would benefit this community and help modify the risk behaviors. When researching the community, I found that a major percentage of the population has diabetes. I would like to see the communities concern for this rising number of diabetes cases rise. I would also like to see a program that involves getting the family active together. However, in order for there to be change there has to be a want for change. I think the way this small community currently living is the way it has always been and changing the lifestyle will take a lot of time... But first, there has to be a want for change.

  5. I noticed that in my facility, the employee are really close once they are at work but do not socialize outside of work. The outreach activities in the community are used as team bonding but it is pretty much just work. Planning staff events that are not related to outreach programs like having a staff retreat can be a plan. The hardest part of planning a retreat is scheduling and budgeting.1 It's all about how much time you want to put into it. The health concern about the team not bonding could be an stressful work environment that may flow over to social life.

  6. In regards to the facility I am currently evaluating, our issues tend to deal with low income, lack of advertisement and limited equipment. The workers running the facility is dependent upon intern availability. The whole purpose of the facility is to provide a place for individuals with chronic conditions to come exercise with monitoring from fitness and health professionals at a low cost. The facility is fairly new and came with a good amount of equipment for free. Due to having more clients and a short time frame for individuals to come exercise, it makes it difficult to train individuals because of the lack of equipment. Now because of the low cost to the client, this inhibits the facility from being able to purchase any equipment for the facility. One way for the facility to solve these issues would be to contact an agency that deals with helping out rural facilities in getting supplies and equipment.

  7. In the community evaluation I am noticing that there is not much for people to do in Dublin. Dublin has a couple of events such as, Dublin lions club will be hosting an Irish stampede 10-5-2K run for the month of June. Also the community does have a local gym but it is really small. My concern for health in this community is that there is not a lot to do here so a lot of families and individuals are not as physically active as some of the surrounding communities. One of my solutions for this would be to open a 24 hour fitness gym and get a lot of promotions for it going around the city. Also I think that the community should have more events or activities that get families physically active and involve together as a community. On the other side of this I know that the reasoning for this community lacking in things such as 24 hour fitness is because of the average income of a family living in this community is not high at all. With this being said there needs to be more outreach to neighboring communities to help fund Dublin and build something like 24 hour fitness.

  8. Currently there is one gym called the Titan Fitness, and there is also a Valerie's gym of Tumbling. The one gym is the communities only source of getting any type of healthy exercise. Because of the size of the town and how small it is there are not many events that are being held in order to help promote a healthy lifestyle. The community of Dublin puts on a Lion's Club 10-5-2k that is being put on in June. The main concern here is they do not have any other activities. Also they have a golf tournament, and an arena fest and rodeo. I think that another source of a gym should be available because the high school gym is not open to the public like Stephenvilles high school gym is. In order to make the community more healthy the Lion's Club or any other service should begin to host more events in order to get these families started being physically active.
